own up to your ignorance

l have listened and heard people air their views concerning the issue and use of Jamii Bora smart id's in the institution. l am not a partisan party in this debate. I'm neither pro or against use of these smart id's. After all we claim we are in a digital era starting with the government to our tv signals in our house holds. l recently heard an old 'mzee' refer to the younger generation as 'hawa watoto digital' so why even argue on the use of smart cards when we claim its the digital era.

For those of us debating and shouting on top of their voices about these smart id's were you not the first mongrels who were lined up at the ICT department to pick up the id's? when the notice went out weren't you one of the first people to comment how fancy you thought they looked and started urging other comrades to go and get an upgrade as you thought they were in to upgrade the image of the school.

Did you for once think what it ment when you read the terms and conditions of being in possession of such a card? Did anyone question why the school required you to be in possession of such a card? So why should you question its use after being in possessions of one and signing off your rights to holding one?

Its the high time the students, staff, and management of Maasai Mara university start  reasoning and working in a professional universally accepted manner holding international standards  of how an institution of higher learning should be managed.

The students should know the legal guidelines in Kenya for issuance and use of smart electronic id's. students should question and demand sensitization of all the products coming from the management. Lets not just sit there and take whatever the management decides to throw at us.

The management on its part should consult the beneficiaries and then sensitize them on the pro's and con's of using the smart id.

In my conclusion l will say this; in some quarters we have been branded the "mashinani" university. Lets not prove our critics right by  putting an end to the "mashinani" mentality. As a student know your rights so as to place your self in a better position to decide whats right for you. fight to be given the opportunity and a conducive environment to see yourself succeed. Its your right to be issued with tools to elevate you to the next  level of success. Question anything that is introduced in your life, its your right make use of it.

For those curious, l never picked up the smart id. From the start l had questions about the issuance. so now l sleep with a smile on my face knowing no one will dictate to me how l will use my HELB loan after all I'm a comrade and comrades must enjoy.

RAILA ODINGA:The merchant of violence

We owe it to ourselves to examine closely those figures that our political leaders and those that aspire to lead us cosy up with in public and also in private. Just as birds of identical plumage flock in close proximity, a man’s character can also be judged from the company that he keeps. Raila Odinga  is a political schizophrenic. His rhetoric oozes with refined contemporary democracy dogma, but his actions reveal a very violent and dictatorial streak. The exorbitant nature of his obsessive preoccupation with violence is rivalled by a few in modern day Africa. His proclivity for violence can be traced to his student days. As a youth, Raila Odinga, whose father served as deputy president of Kenya under Jomo Kenyatta, was given a scholarship to study in the then East Germany. He studied engineering. However, his choice of his undergraduate thesis is not only revealing but also a source of great perturbation. His thesis focused on bomb-making with special focus on nail bomb...

Embracing the challenges of living with dyslexia

Munene Mutwiri was five years old when he first started school. And like any other child, he had to read the alphabet, form words and sentences and count basic numbers. However, his case was different. He had a lot of mispronunciations, performed poorly in Mathematics, and read some words backwards. Once, in a Literature class, he read ‘flashback’ as ‘back flash,’ to the amusement of his classmates. Most of the time, he would see the second name before the first, and mathematical formulae appeared as diagrams since numbers did not make a lot of sense to him, a problem he still encounters to date. As a child, he preferred and loved when his teachers narrated stories rather than have him read them. Now in his mid-20s, he still prefers listening to audiobooks to reading a text novel. At home, his family took him to numerous eye clinics thinking he had an eye problem but deep inside, he knew his eyes were okay, and his reading problems had something to do wit...
