FRESHERS: WELCOME TO CANAAN

First years Maasai Mara University class of 2017. COMRADES POWER. Let me start of by congratulating you for making it to campus as the first batch of post Matian’gi era. Truly you made it. Be proud of yourself for you truly deserved a spot in campus without any assistance from your high school teachers. You are truly the pure crème de la crème of this country.

Before you make any conclusions let me make some clarifications for the use of the word “Canaan”. In this context; “Canaan” does not involve in anyway the current landscape of the country’s politics. “Canaan” is used to expound on the sacred nature of the land you are to call home the next couple of years.

This is Maasai Mara University the star between the Mau and the Maasai Mara game reserve. Welcome to the pride of the Maasai land and the only institution of higher learning in the whole of south rift. Welcome to the only university named after a world heritage site. Be proud to be here as this is sacred land.

Narok is the land of second chances hence the tag “Canaan” this is the land of milk, honey and meat. Deuteronomy 31:20 “When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors, and when they eat their fill and thrive” this is the Promised Land. This is where the Lord God has blessed you to learn, grow and to thrive in His glory.

I will not lecture you on campus code of conduct but I will say this. This is not high school; this is an institution of higher learning. Try and mature up. You are no longer in your mother’s chest. There is no breast here for you to suckle. Life is hard and barren; you will have to start by clearing the bushes to be able to start preparing for the planting season; then you must water your crops and put a perimeter wall on what is yours least it will all be washed away be the floods of stupidity and neglect.

Do not complain so much about the systems in place now it’s much better now than four years ago when I first came here. Soon you will realize campus nowadays is more of sex, drugs, and abortions than books and research. For the ladies you are now grown up women with needs. Most of you are still virgins but before you start losing your virginity educate yourself on birth control pills and abortions. Try and get one of the senior comrades he will make it a little bit bearable during the first few times. With time you will realize condoms are boring and the cute guy you are crushing on only wants it served “as dry fry”. When you get that sponsor the age of your father remember he has a family, when his wife calls at least give her some respect her son is your age mate.

To the guys you will realize the aim is to sleep with as many girls as humanly possible. The only advice I will give is this: in case you get her pregnant try and be responsible for your actions; take the opportunity to man up and be the man,do not take the easy way out; we all know how simple that has become over the years

Teach yourself some beliefs. Try to believe in something. Have a stand for what you believe in.  As a fellow comrade I urge you to live your life to the fullest. Get yourself a Telkom Kenya simcard. It’s preferably the most economical simcard to operate as a student. Browse the internet and learn about all the secrets of adulthood. Learn about how to kiss and how not to get pregnant. Learn on how to dress on a Friday evening and how on a Sunday morning. Learn to go to church and to have religious beliefs also learn the difference between vodka and whiskey.

Do not take your first relationship too serious. I know the first feels like fireworks but trust me it never lasts for long. Don’t dive too deep where you cannot come from.

As I conclude let me thank all those who came before me for it’s because of their sacrifices that all this is possible: Mark Salaon, Dennis Silakwa, Cleophas Mwirigi and Eric Serem. Let me also thank the living legends of our time Robert Too and Amos “TANK” Isimba.

I leave you with this: you have enemies? GOOD: that means you have stood up for something, sometimes in your life.

Live your life to the fullest you made it to campus.

I WISH YOU WERE HERE

The Invisible Dragon I have a dragon inside of me He jumps in my mouth when I want to be free He grabs at my throat when I want to speak He makes me so scared that I feel very weak You can’t see my dragon coz he’s deep down inside But he makes me so nervous; all I want to do is hide I wish that I could speak to you – I wish I had the choice But the dragon inside of me has snatched away my voice When you ask a question and all l want to do is answer you When you call my name and make me think about   you I simply can’t answer – my throats too tight Coz my dragon says “BOO” and I jump with fright It really makes me sad; all I want to do is cry Coz I’d love to be your friend if I wasn’t so shy So if my face doesn’t smile when you ask me to play It’s because this pesky dragon just won’t go away

IN GLORY OF US AS COMRADES

NESH PENDRAGON After a long, cold and rainy stay at home school is finally here again. I take this chance to wish you all a safe journey back to Narok and to those who were still around please remember to go say hello to mummy before you resume school this coming semester. Let me remind us that we have come a long way as an institution but a lot more has to be done not just for us now but for posterity. The enemy still remains the administration. Suspension of students based on weak allegations. The Non-functioning state of SOMMU and the general poor management of student affairs by the management are still thorny issues. A lot of new challenges await us, the large number of students who will be on session to the ‘new’ mabati classes that might be used by some of us if not all. Most of us have already travelled to Narok; having to go check on either their missing marks, to sit for a supplementary exam or the special exams. As you sit your exams I want to wi...

Free thinker

FREE THINKER Am sited with my laptop on my lap on a chilly Tuesday evening  trying to confirm the opening dates for my 2016 academic year, this thought crosses my mind: do we really know the true meaning of the phrase “institution of higher learning?”. I check my universities website and alas it has the same phrase. Then I ask myself; do the people or rather the students know the true meaning or the power in the phrase “institution of higher learning”. Am writing this blog in a somber and sorrowful mood.  Not to shame, insult or critics anybody but to acknowledge the challenges institutions of higher learning are facing. An important idea in the definition of “institution of higher learning” is the notion of academic freedom. I will not indulge myself in the whole notion of defining academic freedom but again l ask does anyone really acknowledge what academic freedom translates to? I happen to love my motherland country Kenya at the same time I happen to love my school too...
